Designing a luxury toy store first birthday party in South Africa requires a delicate balance — playful enough to celebrate childhood, yet refined, timeless, and exquisitely executed. For this first birthday, Outlandish Events brought to life a luxury Toy Store–inspired celebration infused with old-world charm, blending nostalgia, immersive experiences, and subtle magic in every detail.
Every element was curated intentionally, creating an experience that unfolded like a story rather than a conventional theme. Even on a windy day, we ensured the celebration felt enchanting, sophisticated, and utterly memorable.
A Storybook Arrival by Train
Guests were welcomed at a bespoke train stop, setting the stage for a day of wonder. From the ticket booth to a popcorn station and personalised water bottles, the arrival introduced anticipation and excitement immediately.
Along the train route, we displayed adorable photographs of the birthday child, creating personal moments that delighted guests as they made their way to the main celebration area. Children and adults alike were transported by train, making the journey an interactive, playful introduction to the celebration ahead.
The Luxury Toy Store Backdrop: Old-World Charm
At the heart of the event stood a bespoke toy store backdrop with old-world charm, complete with window displays, shelving, and a central door. Shelves were styled with nostalgic toys and treasured heirlooms, including my husband’s grandmother’s porcelain vintage tea set, which I lent to this special client — a long-time supporter and fan.
Gold frames, layered styling, and curated displays transformed the backdrop into a storybook scene. The design evoked nostalgia while remaining refined, creating a visual anchor that both children and adults could enjoy. Every detail reinforced the luxury Toy Store theme and the warm, timeless aesthetic of old-world charm.
A Colour Palette with Depth
Rather than relying on bright, toy-store colours, we selected a sophisticated palette of deep maroon, soft nude, and subtle gold accents. This palette flowed seamlessly across the toy store backdrop, lounge pods, café tables, and even the cake display, giving the event cohesion, elegance, and a quiet sense of luxury.
Lounge Pods and Café Tables: Comfort Meets Style
For seating, we created both lounge pods under draped pergolas and café-style tables, offering guests spaces to relax, connect, and soak in the whimsical environment. Soft fabrics, plush cushions, and subtle gold accents tied the seating to the overall design narrative.
Even with the wind challenging outdoor elements, these carefully designed areas allowed guests to experience comfort, intimacy, and playful elegance — a refined approach often overlooked in children’s events.
The Cake: A Train Table Masterpiece
The cake was a true centrepiece, displayed on our bespoke train table design, blending fun and sophistication. It acted as both a visual statement and a delightful storytelling element, perfectly aligned with the luxury Toy Store theme with old-world charm. Guests admired it long before the first candle was blown, making it a memorable moment of the day.
Entertainment and Sweets: A Disneyland-Inspired Experience
Throughout the day, children were enchanted by a curated variety of entertainers, creating a Disneyland-inspired atmosphere. Waiters dressed as charming clowns circulated with sweets at all times, ensuring that delight was never in short supply. From interactive play to live performances, each element of entertainment was intentionally designed to spark joy and wonder, while maintaining the elegance of the overall celebration.
The Toy Store Experience
To deepen the sense of wonder, we created a fully immersive toy store experience where little guests were invited to shop as part of the celebration. A custom currency, Tzarands, was designed in honour of the birthday boy, allowing children to “purchase” their chosen treasures in a way that felt both playful and magical. Upon arrival, each child received an envelope containing their Tzarands, presented alongside a balloon — a small but meaningful moment that sparked excitement from the very beginning. Complete with bespoke shopping bags and carefully curated toys, the experience transformed a simple birthday into a world where imagination, storytelling, and luxury seamlessly met.
